Journey’s founder Neil Schon first picked up the guitar at “around the age of five.” A quick learner, he joined Santana as a teenager at 15. Schon has said he was asked by Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominos, but that he joined Santana instead, and performed on the album Santana III and Caravanserai.
Brett Bertolucci of WHIP radio said, “The Journey recreation concert is on Saturday March 15th at 3pm. We decided to do this for two reasons. We held a KISS recreation concert just prior to the opening of RFL week and raised over 65K linden. With the theme of RFL this year being Journey of Promise we felt it would be the perfect band to do a tribute show for. We were lucky enough to have OD Designs, another RFL team and music vendor, donate all of the stage and lighting set up for us which was a huge donation for us.”
Relay For Life is a program of the American Cancer Society to remember loved ones lost, celebrate those who survive, and finish the fight against this disease that touches us all. You can help. You can give your time, your passion, your willingness to work. The RFL website can show you how:http://www.relayforlife.org/getinvolved/index.
People started gathering at the WHIP concert shell an hour before the concert, some for work, some to make sure they were there, some to celebrate, to remember, and make a difference.
The concert began with lights going down, the band taking the stage, and the whole place going into hyperdrive.
“I started working the first of January on it, wanted to do something special. I wanted to try the parade again… we did it back in 2010 … and I learned from some of my mistakes so i started looking for a sim.” Kaiila Mahoney says the planning took months. Like all RFL, this was not a single person but a team. WHIP radio, the staff and listeners who inhabited the avatars, the volunteers who make things work, The people who came and donated so generously.
With a bit of understatement, Brett Bertolucci: “It’s really going to be a spectacular event and will culminate with a huge fireworks display in addition to the incredible light show you’ll see during the show.”
FM station KSAN held a contest to see if a better name could be given to the group. The contest yielded the name Journey and you know the rest! Santana keyboardist Gregg Rolie joined the band in the summer of 1973.
Journey’s, “Don’t Stop Believin’.” is the top-selling digital catalog song in history, with sales of more than 4.4 million in the U.S., and was memorably used in the electrifying series finale of HBO’s The Sopranos in 2007.
When asked about donations, Kaiila replied with a characteristic low-key answer, “thats hard to know… we are at about 40K for the night… but i got money from people out there voting on floats…but it was not really about the money it was more a thank you, a time to bond, and just see what a wonderful group of people we are.”
In the end, all that’s left to say, is, The funds we raise fuel the fight. Fourteen million survivors will celebrate another birthday this year! Don’t Stop Believin! Hold on!
